Skinakas Observatory - 25 Year Anniversary


On Sunday May 29th 2011 Skinakas Observatory celebrated its 25 years of successful operations. The event which was under the auspices of the city of Anogia, commenced in the morning in front of the guest house with a welcome by the Mayor of Anogia S. Kefalogiannis. The director of the Observatory, Prof. J. Papamastorakis gave a brief presentation on the history of the Observatory and its scientific accomplishments, while a number of other dignitaries addressed the numerous participants. Following some traditional cretan appetizers, raki, and music, the visitors had the opportunity to explore the telescopes and surrounding area.


In the afternoon of the same day Prof. Papamastorakis gave a public outreach talk at the city of Anogia entitled "25 years of Skinakas Observatory" which was followed by an exposition of spectacular photographs of celestial objects obtained with the telescopes at Skinakas.


Aften sunset the 1.3 m telescope was open to the public who could see through an eye piece selected objects.
